Target Keeps Free Circle Membership Alongside a Paid Subscription

Target brings loyalty, payment and delivery choices under the Circle name. The March announcement outlines distinct options for different shopping habits.

Discount tag, payment card and delivery parcel

Target is reorganising its loyalty offering around different ways to shop. This editorial adaptation covers its March 2024 announcement, keeping the proposed services separate from any later changes to membership terms.

The free programme stays

Fortune covered the retailer's membership announcement. Target's own release sets 7 April for the relaunch: free Target Circle continues, with deals applied automatically at checkout, alongside Target Circle Card and the paid Target Circle 360 option.

The distinction between those options matters more than their shared name. A loyalty account, a payment product and a delivery subscription answer different questions. One concerns access to offers, another concerns how a purchase is paid for, and another concerns how goods reach the customer. Combining their names does not make their functions identical.

Delivery has its own conditions

The company describes same-day delivery under Circle 360 for orders over $35. Its two-day shipping benefit covers eligible items rather than every product. The announcement's fastest delivery description should not be treated as a universal arrival guarantee.

Read an offer in three parts

  • Identify the membership option attached to the benefit.
  • Check the conditions relevant to the particular basket.
  • Separate a delivery estimate from the item's availability.

This is an editorial way of comparing offers, not an additional set of Target rules. A hypothetical household that usually shops in person may evaluate a service differently from one that regularly needs deliveries. Neither pattern, by itself, proves that a paid option produces savings. That comparison depends on the purchases and services actually used.

A clearer choice at checkout

The same distinction helps interpret a launch announcement. Introducing an option does not demonstrate how many customers will choose it, how often they will use it or whether it will change shopping habits. Those are questions for subsequent operating evidence. This account does not turn the launch into a measured retention result or a recommendation to obtain a payment card.
