Brussels–Milan Night Train Moves to a September Launch

European Sleeper has moved the planned launch of its Brussels–Milan night train to 9 September 2026. Its 3 March announcement cites track works in Germany and certification in Switzerland. The revised route will run through Zürich and the Gotthard Pass.

Cross-border services have a wider European backdrop

The operator previously appeared in the European Commission's January 2023 selection of ten cross-border rail pilot projects. That selection covered proposals for both new and improved services. European Sleeper's entry was an Amsterdam–Barcelona night train, a different route from the Brussels–Milan connection now being prepared.

The Commission described the pilots as practical work with operators and authorities to overcome obstacles to international passenger services. Their selection followed its December 2021 action plan. This background does not establish that the Milan service is one of those pilots or that it has received funding under that initiative.

Reaching the departure station

The direct section to the Netherlands is deferred to 2027. Travellers starting beyond the initial route will therefore need to consider how they reach a departure station.

For a business trip, that first connection belongs in the same plan as the overnight leg. Time spent reaching a station, changing platforms and continuing from the arrival point affects when a traveller can realistically attend a meeting. Comparing only the long-distance train's departure and arrival leaves those parts of the day out.

Booking for autumn journeys

Ticket sales are scheduled to open on 17 March, ahead of the September launch. Organisers can therefore investigate autumn journeys before the service begins. For a business itinerary, the useful comparison includes the overnight train, onward connections and the return trip, with enough time to reach the appointment after arrival.
