Whole Foods Sets an Opening Date for Downtown San Diego

Whole Foods Market has set a September opening for downtown San Diego, adding a grocery destination to a larger redevelopment and support for local food rescue.

City buildings, a grocery shop and fresh produce

Whole Foods Market has scheduled its downtown San Diego opening for 23 September 2026. The store at 201 W. A Street will carry more than 1,500 items from California-based suppliers, according to the retailer's 20 August announcement.

The location sits within a wider redevelopment in the United States. In its July 2024 introduction to West, Holland Partner Group identified that tower as the first part of a three-block project. It named The Torrey as the second project and future home of the downtown grocery store. West itself combines homes, offices and retail space.

The grocery store belongs to The Torrey, while the earlier West announcement explains the wider redevelopment. Together, the projects bring housing, workplaces and shopping destinations into neighbouring downtown blocks.

Everyday shopping will establish the routine

A store's role in a neighbourhood develops through repeated visits. Someone buying ingredients on the way home has different needs from a customer planning a larger weekly shop. The opening provides a starting point for those choices; shopping patterns will emerge once customers can use the location.

Planning a first visit

  • Plan a visit on or after the announced opening date.
  • Check the services available for the intended shopping trip.
  • Allow time to find the departments and products needed.

Food rescue connects the store with local support

The retailer also announced food and monetary donations to Porchlight Community Services. The nonprofit describes its work as collecting surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants and other businesses and redistributing it to neighbours. Its activities combine food rescue with a pantry, including market-style shopping and food baskets.

That work gives food leaving a commercial setting another route to the community. Collection and distribution are distinct tasks: obtaining surplus is the beginning, while getting it to households is the practical purpose. The organisation's description offers context for the donation without supplying a forecast of how much this new store will contribute.
